Red Sofa

Red Sofa Café in Vredehoek has a homey, no-fuss vibe, and you could literally spend all day here. They have Deluxe coffee, free Wi-Fi, and a couch (of course). This café is tucked away from the bustle of the city, which makes it the ideal spot to get some serious out-of-office work done.

Rob Gardner and Tabitha Guy opened the café in March 2012, as an extension of the Red Sofa brand. Rob started Red Sofa DVDs (right next door) a while back, and Tabitha was one of the regulars. They decided to open up a cool space together, where they could just hang out with friends, drink some coffee and eat good food, which is exactly what Red Sofa café is. It has that small-town, everyone-knows-everyone vibe.

Red Sofa

Rob and some friends came up with the name for the DVD store by pointing at inanimate objects, and ‘Red Sofa’ just stuck. The café recently had a facelift. Rob is quite the handyman, and paired with Tabitha’s eye for detail, they designed the interior themselves. They also managed to track down the original, infamous red sofa.

Tabitha created the menu, which includes all the classic breakfast and lunch options, made with extra care and quality ingredients. It also includes their notorious plate of bacon (yes, just bacon in a plate!), and the potato side-salad. Anything on the menu with Tabitha’s secret chicken spice is seriously addictive, and rumor has it this is why their customers turn into regulars.

Look out for their next interactive Red Sofa Experiments evening with magician Stuart Lightbody.

They’re open Tuesday to Sunday, 7am-5pm, Corner of Exner & Derry Street in Vredehoek.

Pet Friendly.
